Bailiff's Blog

Simon Abigail was the bailiff through the summer of 2011.  He provided regular updates with information and observations following his daily rounds of the fishery.

We get lots of grandparents bringing their grandchildren fishing and introducing them to the joys of the sport.  Frequently, the young people quickly show their elders how it’s done!  Arthur Hall wasn’t having any of that when he brought young Grant Bain out for the day.  Here’s a picture of centenarian Arthur giving 41 year old Grant some tips!  Arthur cheered us all up and I, for one, will be pleased to sit and fish aged 100!

Chris Larder and Gerry Hayes have been regular visitors during the summer.  Both have enjoyed the ups and downs of fishing but have always been happy with their days out.

Richard and Callum Hart caught over twenty fish each with most around the 4/5lb mark.  Here’s young Callum with one of the smaller fish he caught.

Bob Willett has been on holiday from Bedfordshire.  He bagged this 12lb 8oz Mirror on the infamous Tesco Value Prawns!  His fish handling skills were a joy to watch and a few anglers learnt quite a few tips as he carefully applied anticeptic treatment to minor wounds on this beautiful fish.  These packs are very cheap and its worth having some with your tackle as they can prevent disease and other problems.  We all thought the fish was heavier than it was but Bob checked his scales and they were accurate.

10 years old Danny Tait fished with father Steven.  Danny caught a 12lb 2oz Common Carp and plenty of other fish around 5lbs.

Chris and Kyle Odell enjoyed their day at the lake.  They helped Keith Richardson land a 13lb 8oz Mirror and then Chris caught this 12lb fish (left) for himself.

Peter Durdin spent a week in The Old Pig Barn with his wife Anne.  They both had some good fishing and Peter landed three fish over 14lb during the week.

Matthew Blewitt bagged a nice Mirror on his visit.

Two of our regulars have landed fine fish recently.  Tony Mills patiently attracts bigger fish with his large lumps of luncheon meat.  As he fished only a few feet away from his platform, I stood chatting to him and his line kept moving.  Tony explained that frequently he waits up to half an hour before the wary fish takes the bait for real.  The end result was this nice 12lb Mirror.  No float or weights involved, just his trusty luncheon meat!  The week before, during the Indian summer, Tony fished all day without success.  However, as the heat subsided in the last hour of daylight he pulled out a 16lb fish.  Although he photographed the fish in his net he really wanted his picture taken, and regretted that there was no one else present to see his quarry.  He was pretty chuffed when I took this snap!

Jack Daniels will be known to most visitors.  He has been a real regular throughout the summer and enjoys the peace and quiet of the lake.  Earlier in the summer he landed a 22lb Mirror but because he has caught much bigger fish elsewhere he didn’t bother to photograph it.  It’s the largest reported catch from the lake but Jack is very bashful about his success.  I walked through the gate recently only to observe Jack’s rod tip with a good bend in it.  I made sure I photographed this one that registered 14lb 9ozs.

Adam and his pal Harry have hauled plenty of fish out throughout the summer generally in evening sessions.  We frequently comment on the Carp caught but forget some of the specimen Roach, Rudd and Tench that are in the lake.  Adam recently caught this nice Roach.  Rob Crozier is also pictured with another.

Martin and his pal Geoff found a few hours during their recent holiday in Norfolk to visit the lake.  Geoff put three maggots on his hook and within seconds of his first cast he’d landed a 9lb Common Carp.  Quite a nice introduction!

We could do with some rain to raise the water level.  The recent Indian summer saw the fishing tail off a bit in the heat but the lake seems back to normal again as good catches are being reported.

Tight lines!

Danny and Mags Johns have enjoyed some good evening sessions.  Danny caught this 9lb Common with cheese paste – his personal best.  He seems to catch his best fish just as he is packing up!

Stephen Everitt had 14 fish up to 7lbs by 10 o’clock fishing paste over pellet.

Lee Schofield had a week’s holiday staying nearby and spent a good proportion of the time at the lake.  He had some exceptional days fishing a number of baits.  His best fish was a 9lb Common with plenty close to it, predominantly caught with luncheon meat.

Matt and John have continued their successful evenings and now bring their children (I’m looking forward to seeing photos of their success).

You may recall I recently wrote about the angler who left his pole unattended and visited his pal in the neighbouring swim.  The last he saw of his five sections of pole was as an unfortunate fish swam across the lake.  Christophe Wasiak was fishing yesterday when he couldn’t believe his eyes as he reeled in a pole.  We recovered the pole from the lake with the top three sections in place. If the angler who lost it cares to let me know the maker of the pole I will return it to its rightful owner.  Dragging five sections of pole around the lake cannot have done anything for the welfare of the fish.  It is a lesson to us all to make sure we don’t leave tackle unattended.

Dave and his wife have been staying in the Old Pig Barn and he had some excellent sport at the lake.  His family came to visit and Grandson caught a 9lb Carp.

Ryan Chalk did well on his first visit so he returned again today with his father.  Ryan landed a 12lb Carp and should be sending the photos.

13 July 2011

This has been a busy fortnight at the lake.  Terry Stamp had a good day and caught a nice Mirror whilst float fishing in the margin.  I saw Gary Funnell late on Monday afternoon and he seemed to have been catching fish steadily throughout the day on both pole and method feeder - 56 he said mostly in the 2-3lb mark.  I expect he made it to fifty before calling it a day!  Actually, it turns out that he made it to over 80 and the last three fish of the day were all doubles!  Some day!

Alan Dumpleton caught his first Carp on Monday.  He played the fish very well and handled it like a pro.  Well done Alan!

Tuesday was a beautiful day and most anglers enjoyed a good day’s fishing.  Terry Granfield was the first to make me reach for my camera.  He caught this lovely 8lb specimen on a pole along with twenty odd other nice fish on his first visit.

Next up was Peter (below) who has been trying his hand at a few evening sessions.  This was also an 8lb fish caught on a ledger.

Harry had a good evening pole fishing with his best fish being a 7lb Common.

Don’t ask me about baits as they have been eating everything!

Matt and John have had some more good evening sessions.  John returned on Saturday and having landed a 10lb Common his best fish of the day was this 12lb Mirror.  Son Benjamin, aged 7, also caught this 6lb Common.  (Photos being emailed to site)

Alan Grimbley paid a visit whilst holidaying nearby.  He enjoyed his return after a two year absence and caught Carp up to 5lbs.

Colin Ward had an excellent morning on Tuesday.  In three hours he had 29 fish up to 7lbs.

The Thurtells enjoyed the sunny conditions on Monday and had Carp up to 7lbs.

Bill Thorley is a lucky man in more ways than one!  Last week during an evening session he heaved out a 22lb Common Carp.  Minutes later he landed an eighteen pounder.  Both fell to Spam ledgered on fairly light tackle.  Sadly no photographs available but the fish were witnessed by other anglers present that night.  Bill returned again this week with his wife and friends Danny and Mags Johns.  The wind got up a bit and Bill did the gentlemanly thing and adjusted the umbrella acting as a wind break for his wife.  You’ve guessed!  Just like the pole last week his rod and tackle disappeared into the lake and he was unable to retrieve it.  As he was packing his gear away Mags cast from the adjacent swim and can you believe their luck?  She picked his line up by accident.  The fish was still attached and Bill was able to rescue his tackle.  To add insult to injury the fish escaped just as it was about to be landed!
