This time of year sees an influx of holidaymakers who hear about us by a variety of means. Very few, if any, have blanked and some have found some big fish. One visitor broke rule number two on the list and lost five sections of his pole - he left his hook baited in the water when he went to the next peg to talk with his mate. The last he saw of the pole was it being carried across the lake by an unknown fish before it sunk without trace. Monday was the hottest day of the year so far and the lake was packed. Bill Thorley enjoyed his first day so much that he tried his luck again for an evening session on Thursday. He was rewarded with fish up to 8lb and thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet the lake provides. Following the heat on Monday the fish were spawning in the margins again on Tuesday morning. There are no flies on young Jamie Trudgill I can tell you! He landed a nice Common Carp which I photographed and suggested we weighed. Out came his scales from his bag and I did the business. ‘5lbs’ I announced. ‘There’s no way that fish is 5lbs’ he declared. I stood my ground and said ‘it registered 5 on your scales’. I had another look at the scales only to realise I had done him out of 6lbs by reading the kilograms rather than pounds scale - we just can’t find the staff! So apologies Jamie and well done for spotting my mistake. Matt and John have enjoyed some good evening sessions and they told me about a similar experience they had. Matt weighed a 15lb Common Carp for Tony but gave him the result in kilograms. He also wasn’t having any of that! Tony bagged his fish on a free running line baited with a whole slice of bread. He tells me he hooked the bread in the middle, folded it into quarters, stood on it and sunk it to the bottom in the margin. It worked! Father and son Eddie and Stuart Thorpe had a good day on Friday. It was Stuart’s first visit so Eddie led the way with an 8lb Mirror. Stuart promised to send the photo from his mobile phone. The forecast is good so let’s hope the weather produces some excellent fishing. Tight lines! Simon 17 June 2011
Paul Hammond fished the lake on Thursday for the first time and he bagged over thirty, the best of which was 7lbs, but he also caught plenty about the 4/5lb mark. Harold Noden couldn’t believe his luck when he caught a 12lb 14oz Common Carp on his first cast at the lake. Thursday proved to be a successful day for most visitors with the evening seeing plenty of action. This week has not seen so many anglers as I guess preparations have been in hand for the new river season. I had a couple of successful afternoon sessions using banded pellet in the margins. I caught some lovely Tench in stunning condition. Diane Street promised to send a photo of her best fish caught on Tuesday evening. Husband Peter was less successful, not that Diane was rubbing it in! David Riley has been on holiday from South Yorkshire. He had a very enjoyable Thursday when his best fish was this (right) 11lb Mirror. Wayne stayed the course without an umbrella on Thursday and lost count of the number he caught. The biggest was about 6lb and he was constantly taking them out of the margins using banded pellet. Wayne is another angler who I treat as a ‘barometer’. If he’s not catching I know it’s a bad day! His secret is small amounts of feed on every cast and he keeps busy. I hope you’ve had a successful start to the new season. Tight lines! Simon 1 June 2011 You may remember that back in February ten year old Jake and his dad braved the weather and Jake landed a 4lb Mirror Carp. Well they were back again last Saturday and young Jake had another great day. They caught about a dozen Carp each, up to 4lb. I watched Jake casting his line with great accuracy, close to reeds in the margin. This lad could be one to watch! Russ Dainty has been staying on his boat in Brundall. He again enjoyed an excellent evening’s fishing.
Sunday evening saw the wind drop significantly so I decided to have another session with my new pole. Whilst Gary was heaving them out next door to me I landed a small Mirror, that ran to ounces, and on my final cast of the evening landed a 4lb Mirror. Very pleasant it was too. Keith Rogers landed an 11lb Mirror but son Jack caught more fish, up to 4lbs, than he did during the day. Clive and Mandy have been staying in the Old Pig Barn and enjoyed some good fishing. Clive was excited to catch this 9lb Common (below).
Stefano was back on holiday this week. He had success with his method feeder and had 15 Carp up to 10lbs. Tight lines! Simon 27 May 2011
Alec Palmer hasn’t been such a regular visitor lately but made up for lost time on Wednesday. Alec can always be sure to catch, even if others are finding conditions hard. His best fish was 13lbs caught on his trusty Tesco Value Prawns! Thursday was also fairly breezy so Henry Fairfield ledgered his bread bait rather than surface fishing as usual. He was rewarded with a beautiful 9lb Common Carp that was in exceptional condition. Tony Locke has been staying in the Old Pig Barn on site this week. He watched in sheer awe at Gary Funnell’s success on Monday! Gary explained how he fished with boilies and a method feeder, so Tony took himself off to Lathams and bought the necessary tackle. He could not have been more pleased with himself when, on Thursday evening, he bagged a 9lb specimen. He said he had never before caught such a large fish and was convinced by the method feeder. He and his wife can’t wait to book another holiday at the lake!
Neil Kenwright had another great day on Friday and landed his personal best, a 13½lb Mirror. I’m thinking of carrying a voice recorder as well as my camera to record the things you say to the fish as you put them back in the water! A grown man talking to fish as if they are little children is not unknown! Knowing that the fish are tired, having put up a fight prior to being netted, most anglers show great care for their quarry as they are returned to the water. It is clear how much you care for these fish and it is to be commended. Thanks to those of you who have invested in, and are using, unhooking mats. The weather has meant that it has not been the most pleasant week for fishing but that hasn’t prevented some stonking catches! Tight lines! Simon 22 May 2011 I’m often asked which baits work well at the lake. This week has been fairly typical. Fish have been caught on maggots, sweetcorn, pellets, luncheon meat, mussel meat, prawns, cockles, worms, bread and even cheese sprinkled with chilli powder. There doesn’t seem to be anything that they don’t take!
I took the plunge and bought a second-hand Maver Competition 151 pole together with a variety of tackle. It is a much better pole than I could have bought new with the same money so I am delighted with my purchase. Gary was on hand to offer his guidance and, using small chunks of gammon ham left over from the weekend, I tried my luck. I managed to pull out seven small Carp so it was an okay start.
Stuart made the short journey from Hemsby on Monday evening and, using a pole and luncheon meat, he was enjoying fish up to about 3lbs when I left. His pal Darren gave him a look at the lake and tried his pole out for size. He soon landed a small Carp and thinks he might also buy one. Like most visitors to the lake he was impressed by the quality and condition of the fish. Lots of you have been making good use of the unhooking mats, so thank you for that. The idea is that you purchase your own and have them with you wherever you fish. Most anglers probably spend more on bait in one visit than the cost of a mat so please ensure you have one.
Mick Brown had another successful session of twenty eight Carp up to 7lbs.
Alec Crosby bagged seventeen fish on his first outing. He enjoyed the Tench and had Carp up to 8lbs.
We had a couple of days last month when the fish were spawning and I thought it had finished. Friday was a warm morning and they went mad again! All around the lake they were active in the margins. Late afternoon the action was over and it wasn’t long before they were feeding again. Paul Rudd landed a 12lb Mirror on his first visit and promised to email his photographs.
Darren Moore and his mate Paddy were fishing again on Friday evening. Darren showed me photographs of a beautiful 14lb 7oz Mirror Carp he caught last week. He promised to email them into the website. What a week!

Bob Cobbler brought three of his pals to the lake on Thursday and his first fish was also a double. Doubles have been caught most days this week. Colin Dickinson has been on holiday in the area and he enjoyed some good sessions using a variety of baits. I spent a glorious couple of hours fishing on Tuesday evening. The sunset was magnificent. I had half a dozen fish up to 8lbs. Trevor Drake fished with bread until dusk and caught numerous Carp and Tench on his first visit. Talking of Tench, we received a nice email from Neil Kenwright this week. "Hi Simon, having only fished Mill Road 3 times now I wish to say that it keeps getting better and better. I am a non local angler living at Horsey for 17 years. I usually fish the Mere there and surrounding rivers and partake in some still waters because of my love of catching Tench. So when I saw on your website you had Tench I had to come and give it a go. I've caught Tench on every visit and the last time this Monday gone I caught 21 of the little green machines, they ranged from 4 inches long up to a good 12oz and all bar the smallest already have the classic Tench fighting spirit. I can't wait for these guys to pass the 2lb mark which won’t be too many more months at the rate they eat. I enjoy fishing for all species so I must give the carp a mention and as usual they go off like trains when hooked. My best yet was this 8lb common which was my last fish of the day and took me a good 15 minutes to net (I probably made it look harder than it should be) as I only fish with relatively light tackle and know only traditional methods of fishing with 6lb line straight through, using a standard waggler rod. I believe it's not what you catch but what you’re happy with. You have a great place which can only get better if all anglers make it so. Hope to see you soon, regards Neil Kenwright.
Neil was back on Friday and bagged 20 Tench up to 12ozs, 12 Rudd up to a pound, and 15 Carp up to 4 lbs. What a great day! I heard a report of a Tench of two and a half pounds last week so they must be growing fast! I am surprised there are not more anglers during these lovely evenings. Ticket prices drop from 430pm and you can fish until dusk. There certainly seems to be lots of activity in the evenings and you can virtually have the place to yourself. Gary Funnell had the best session I am aware of. He had only been at the lake for less than half an hour, and had bagged a dozen Carp, when he paid for his ticket. He went on to land over 70 of which I believe the largest was 11lb. The search for a pole has ended and a deal has been done. More of that on another day! Tight lines! Simon 28 April 2011 I’ve just returned from two weeks holiday abroad and have been catching up on all your news. The warm weather has seen some excellent catches and the fish have been busy spawning in the margins. The lake has changed in just two weeks. Everything is green and lush and growing at a pace. Our female Mallard duck has seventeen ducklings in tow and if you’re very quiet you may see the Moorhen with five chicks. The birdlife is very active and the Swallows are back. Ken Jones made his first visit to the lake on Tuesday. He brought some mussels with him which proved very successful. Wednesday was a beautiful day and Sylvia and Colin Ward made the most of it. They both had successful sessions and Colin had landed about forty Carp before midday. Father and son Rob Fennings drew a blank at a venue in Norwich so made the trip to Stokesby. Both were very impressed by the lake and the condition of the fish. They both got amongst the Carp. Derek Pewtress had a great day on Thursday and left very happy. Colin Taylor and his friend Gary, with young son, made the trip from Leicester! They booked a holiday on a Broads hire cruiser and then realised the closed season was in place. The fishery was recommended to them and they lost count of the Carp they caught up to about 7lbs. Dean Osborne is a fly fisherman and had camped at Clippesby with his wife and young son Jake. They tried their luck with a box of maggots and Jake landed a good few silver fish. I had some Spam left over from my great triumph I shall regale you with in a moment, so left them to use it up. I didn’t see them before they left but neighbouring anglers assured me they had caught a Carp before they left. Well done Jake and Dean! Send the photos if you read this. Richard Savage was impressed by Ken Jones and his mussels so gave them a go on Thursday. He caught fish with everyone!

8 April 2011 It has been a pleasure to welcome anglers on their first visit to the lake this week. Gary Funnell enjoyed his fishing on Saturday and Sunday so much, that he came back again on Monday! He had to work hard to tempt his fish but had three successful days. Stuart Smithson has been having some great days out recently so he brought his partner’s nine year old son Owen along. Owen landed a 3lb Carp and Janet suggested a photo. A few minutes later Owen bagged a 10lb 3oz Common and is now hooked on fishing for life! Stuart sent the photo to the national angling press and as I write it is about to be published. Well done Owen! (See the Latest News page for Owen's report) Not to be outdone, Stuart has had his own success. He landed so many using his new pole on Friday that he changed tactics to see if he could do the same with rod and line. Using paste brought a good number of nice Carp. Henry Fairfield brought his pal Bob Gedge along on Thursday. Plenty of fish were showing and they surface fished with bread and Bob bagged an 8lb Carp. The fish have been more active in this warmer weather. All sorts of bait have been successful. Alec Palmer had a couple of nice Roach that were over a pound. He likes to vary his bait and this week used a Halibut paste. He had Carp up to 6lb and some small Tench. Roy Rowland tried one of Alec’s tricks and caught an 8lb Common on prawn. Is there anything Carp won’t eat?! Russ Dainty has been on holiday on his boat at Brundall. He was busy on Friday afternoon and lost count of the number he caught. He was most put out because his best fish eluded him when one of his knots gave way. Having had a very successful session he was more concerned with ‘the one that got away’ than his overall success! A number of Tench have been caught recently and I’m amazed at how they fight. They are beautiful fish and provide great sport. With the weather set fair I suspect the next few days will see some excellent fishing. Oh, I nearly forgot to mention it, I had a few hours fishing on Monday and was pleased to land a couple of small Carp. Great fun but I’m still only a beginner! Tight Lines, Simon
Graham Garrett only took up fishing last year but recently demonstrated that you don’t need to be an expert to enjoy success. On a day when few other anglers saw much luck he bagged twenty Carp up to 5lbs. He fished the margins with maggots and had a very enjoyable day. Trevor Burrett enjoyed his first visit last week and was back again on Monday. He chose to fish a different swim this time and caught 41 fish, estimating his total catch to be about 80-90lbs. He caught one Tench and had Carp to 5lb 14ozs. His catch included six over 4lbs and three over 5lbs. I’ve lost count of the number of times recently, whilst taking ticket money, anglers have told me that they haven’t yet caught anything. Whilst writing out the ticket I have had to grab my camera and photograph their catch - at least they say I bring them luck! Henry Fairfield did just that on Wednesday. He had earlier caught a couple of smaller Carp but hooked this nice fish of about 5lbs, whilst surface fishing bread, amongst the Reedmace at the margin. He persevered with his tactics throughout the day and more fish followed. It is noticeable that more fish are surface feeding throughout the day as the weather warms up. Ian North is a great fanatic of surface fishing and tells me that at the weekend he saw plenty of movement around one swim and tried his luck. He landed a 7lb and an 8lb Carp very shortly afterwards. I find the variety of bait presentation used by anglers at the lake to be very interesting. The trick seems to be to know which tactic works on each day. I haven’t fished for a couple of weeks but I’m looking forward to trying out various methods I have been learning about. I have narrowed down my search for a pole but my budget seems to have grown. Dennis from Hemsby became the proud father of George, a 6lb 12oz boy, very recently. His wife packed him off fishing on Thursday and he celebrated by catching a 15lb 9oz Common Carp! The fish fell to maggots on Dennis’s trusty pole. He promised to email us the photo from his mobile phone. Congratulations on both events Dennis! Tight lines, Simon 25 March 2011 The last couple of weeks have been busy at the lake. I roped Ian, my brother-in-law, into helping to build steps to make access easier to four of the swims. Lots of visitors have been impressed with the work done at the lake, particularly the otter-proof fencing. The fencing will prevent otters from devastating the fish stock. It also pays dividends in other respects; last week a pair of Egyptian Geese turned up with four goslings. They were intent on making the lake their home. The male flew into the lake but because the goslings were too young to fly, the female simply did circuits on the outside of the fence and made an incredible racket for a few hours. Thankfully, nobody let them through the gate and they seem to have disappeared to pastures new! If they were successful in getting in they can make fishing more difficult when they are territorial and protective of their young. Great to look at but better on the other side of the fence! As the breeding season is upon us, our resident male Mallard Duck has been under threat in the last few days. Other males have been invading his territory in an attempt to pair up with the female. I’m not sure who is winning but various suitors have been dispatched! The water level has dropped slightly and as the weather has been warming up so the banks have dried out nicely. We have been planting trees around the lake and I still have some more to do. Patience paid off for Richard Savage last week. He had a couple of lean visits to the lake but his last trip was rewarded by a good days fishing which included fish up to 8lbs. The good news is that many anglers have enjoyed excellent fishing. Tuesday saw Wayne back in action again; using sweet corn and pellets he fished three areas alternately within his swim and lost count of the number of 2-3lb Carp he caught (probably in excess of fifty). He religiously fishes the margins and continually uses small amounts of feed throughout the day. Pole fishing certainly allows that pin-point accuracy for presenting bait with light tackle. Les Lippett wrapped up this year’s annual leave with a visit to the lake and landed an eight and a half pound Common. Don’t forget to email the photo Les! Wednesday and Thursday were beautiful days with lots of fish topping. They proved harder to catch however, and it was down to Trevor Burrett on his first visit to show how it is done. Using exactly the same tactics as Wayne, he pulled out twenty Carp, the best of which was about 8lbs. Trevor is an experienced angler and kindly shared some time with me to experience pole fishing. I followed his instruction and caught two Carp within ten minutes - I’m definitely in the market for a pole. I’m not sure I can wait for my birthday so may just have to splash some cash! The better weather has brought more anglers to the lake and I would like to thank you all for making my job a lot easier with regard to clearing up. Most visitors are meticulous at clearing up and using the bins provided for rubbish. Thank you for your assistance. Tight lines! Simon 11 March 2011
Alec Palmer had a good day on Friday. He caught about a dozen fish, the largest of which was 8lb. Anglers have enjoyed successful fishing with a full range of baits, including bread, maggots, sweet corn, worms, luncheon meat and Tesco Value Prawns! It only seems to be me who hasn’t caught anything. I only managed two hours fishing this week and drew my first blank. More practice needed!
Tight lines! Simon 4 March, 2011
I enjoy listening to you all and picking up your tips. Watching Wayne recently, and seeing John today, has made me think about investing in a pole. They help to put the float in the same position every time, and feeding the same spot is easy using a feeder at the end of the pole. They also allow you to put a light float and line much further out than could be cast with a rod and line. No doubt those who swear by a rod and line will let me know their pros and cons. Each to their own!
The sun came out on Friday so I took advantage of the opportunity to fish. Put some of John’s tips to good use. Result: Two hours=Two fish. It wouldn’t be good enough for John, but I was reasonably happy as both fish gave me a good bit of sport. They fell to sweetcorn close to the margin. Not bad for a beginner!
25 February, 2011 I met George and his ten year old son Jake, fishing at the lake on Sunday. They hadn’t had a fish for a couple of hours, or more, and as we stood chatting, young Jake struck and hooked a Mirror Carp of about 4lbs. Jake played the fish like a real pro and handled it extremely carefully. I managed to snatch a photo which showed his delight at landing his personal best. Unfortunately my memory card on the camera is corrupted so if you still have your picture on your mobile George, please send it to info@millroadfishery.co.uk and we will upload it onto the website. Jake was fishing with maggots and will no doubt remember this day at the lake for a very long time. George was equally excited watching son Jake’s success. Although it was cold, I can’t think of a better way to spend the day with your son! Well done Jake and hope to see you both again soon! It has been very cold again this week. Les Lippett has been a regular visitor, invariably coping with cold conditions. He didn’t have a lot of luck on Monday but he enjoys the lake. We both saw the Barn Owl and a pair of Swans made an appearance at the lake. I tried my luck again for an hour late Tuesday afternoon (not so cold). Didn’t have a bite for 40 minutes and then caught a 2lb Common – well worth the effort! I was using my ever reliable sweet corn close to the margin. The footpaths around the lake are a bit wet and boggy at present. I hope the warmer weather, promised for the weekend, will dry them out. If you visit you will definitely need boots. I have been weeding the concrete footpath to the lake which has improved access, for wheelchair users in particular. Got soaked in the heavy rain doing so on Wednesday!

18 February 2011 I have met about a dozen anglers at the lake in the last two weeks. Very few have gone home without catching something. Wayne has been the most successful landing about forty carp up to 3lbs in weight. He was fishing close to the margin using sweet corn to tempt his quarry. His trick, to keep the fish feeding, was to put a half a dozen grains of sweet corn in every cast. It certainly worked for him! I followed Wayne’s example and a few days later fished the same swim using his tactics. I broke my duck with a Common Carp and Mirror Carp both about 2lbs. I fished for about three hours but didn’t have Wayne’s continued success. My previous fishing experience has mainly been confined to coarse fishing on the Broads. There’s a lot to learn about carp fishing, so I need to get more practice in! The Barn Owl has been quartering the dykes late in the afternoon and the Sparrowhawk has been a regular visitor. The lake is a lovely place to fish and to see wildlife and it’s my privilege to spend more time there than most. I look forward to meeting more of you and hearing your success stories. Remember that when I am around I usually have a camera available. If you want your picture taken with your prize fish I am always happy to take a snap so others can see it on the website.
