News and Pictures from 2012

November News

Here is a lovely picture just received from Kirk Watts. Kirk first came to Mill Road a few years ago and caught his very first double figure fish here.  He has progressed a long way since then and has caught some very nice carp from Norfolk's harder fisheries.  He still pops back to Mill Road occasionally and sent me this photo of a fish he caught in the summer. A great example of a well framed photograph and a lovely fish too.

Although the fishing is harder now than in the summer, there are still some nice fish being caught.  Martin Cox is staying in the Old Pig Barn while his partner attends a local course. Martin fished hard and caught some smaller commons, but on the Saturday evening at 4pm just as it was getting dark he was rewarded with a 10lb + fish. Breadflake fished on the surface was the unlikely tactic, well done to Martin (photos soon hopefully!)

The Switch On

In London they have Robbie Williams or some such celebrity to turn on the Christmas lights. At Mill Road we have our own modest annual switch on, but for us its the otter proof fence that gets turned on.  It takes quite a few hours to cut back the brambles and gorse, but once it is done the fence will hopefully protect our fish for the winter period when the otters travel further looking for an easy meal. In case you don't recognise the view, that's Janet doing the honours!

Oh and by the way, on Janet's right is the gate, please ensure that you keep this shut at all times!

Adrian was staying in the Old Pig Barn for the week with his wife. He fished most days and caught every time he ventured out.  On his final session Adrian (below) took 21 carp up to 15lb.  His tactics involved the method feeder and three dead maggots on the hook.

Clocks go Back

The clocks go back this weekend so the reduced price tickets for the afternoon now starts at 2.30pm. So that's £5 for a day ticket, £2.50 for under 16's and £2.50 for fishing after 2.30pm. Where else can you get entertainment this cheap?

Starting 'Em Young

We had little Tilly to stay this weekend and over lunch Janet suggested an hour down at the lake in the afternoon. "She loves seeing the wildlife and watching you catch fish." So plans shelved I grabbed a rod and bag, oh and an umbrella as by now it was pouring down! Stopping only at the veg patch to dig up a few worms I headed down to an almost empty lake. I was fishing with a 1970's glass rod and Mitchell 300 reel. A small waggler with simple shotting and a worm on a size 14 hook completed the outfit. I fed a few pellets every five minutes and was soon getting bites.  The first carp fell off, but after that I had several commons up to around 5lb in just over an hour.  Despite their glum faces I think the ladies were enjoying themselves! I cannot stress enough that the fish are still feeding well even as the temperature falls. Slightly smaller hooks, smaller baits and feeding little and often is the way forward if you want some action. You may catch using typical carp tactics, but I bet I'll catch more than you do!

News Catch Up

OK so I have been very slow this year in adding news to the site, but with Janet away at the Olympics I have not been as organised as I could have been.  Anyway, here are a few photos an stories from the last few weeks.

First up is Richard Jermy from Martham with this lovely 16lb fish.  No further details, but a few regulars will recognise this particular fish.

Harry and Danny have been fishing the lake at every possible opportunity and sticking it out for long hours.  They are very keen to learn and have been catching more than their fair share of fish.  On the left is Harry with a very pretty mirror.

On the left is Danny Trop with one of his fish at 10lb.  A very good example of a nicely framed photo and a well held fish.

Remember Travis (champion Kick-boxer), well this is his older brother Amon with a lovely fish of 13lb.

Stefan Smith's first ever visit to Mill Road proved to be very productive.  The local angler took 13 fish for a total weight estimated at around 65lb. His best fish was this 9 1/2lb common.  All fish were taken on the method feeder cast close to the island margin.

Olympic Special

Hope everyone enjoyed the Olympics! A few gold medals and some sun and everyone seems a bit happier with life. I had a report from Barry who had a break from catching huge roach to take a carp of 13lb.  I expect he was fishing red maggot on light tackle which has done so well for him.  I know he has photos so hopefully I will see them soon.

The lad on the right is Travis Manning who lives in Stokesby and has been a regular visitor to the lake.  Travis has been kickboxing for 5 years and is 3 times national champion, 2 time British champion, Five Nations champion and current world champion!! Mill Road Fishery are pleased to be sponsoring Travis in his upcoming competitive event at the Ocean Rooms in Gorleston on 19th August. Good luck to Travis. (13 August)

Summer update

IMG00032.jpg

I have been a bit slow in updating the website this summer as I have been busy fishing my syndicate water in Bucks in search of monsters!  Barry has been catching a few monsters of his own at Mill Road, he seems to have discovered a method to sort out the bigger roach and rudd. In his latest haul Barry had twenty fish including specimens of 1lb, 1 3/4lb and 2lb. Barry's method involves fishing with light tackle, red maggots and regular feeding.  Even regular anglers had no idea about the quality of these silver fish and Barry seems to have created quite a stir!  Another regular, Ian North has also been getting amongst the specimens.  Ian concentrates on the carp and invariably fishes on the surface under his rod top. Ian also tends to fish the evening sessions, arriving after 4.30pm to benefit from the half price ticket and fishing through until dusk.  Ian's biggest carp was 15lb 4 (still waiting for a picture!)

What its all about

Been a while since the last update and I have a few reports to include this time. Had a lovely email from Brian which I'll just repeat here as I couldn't say it any better. "

Hi, my name is Brian and I visited your fishery for the first time on wednesday 13th June 2012.

How refreshing to find a place where the natural environment, the indigenous wildlife it sustains and fish welfare are more important than just taking money. Catch fish or not, it was a pleasure just being there. The people ( other anglers ) were friendly and sociable, even one of the water voles introduced itself and sat watching me for a while. From the friendly banter between the other anglers, I assumed they were regular visitors, which is always a good sign. I did, however, come to fish, and did indeed catch plenty. Lots of small roach, rudd and tench. I even caught a few carp, ( pictures of which I have attached ) which I don't normally target, every one of which gave a good fight. I must say the fish welfare policy is quite evident, ( the proof is in the eating as they say ) and the roach tasted devine. ( Ha Haaaa, gotcha ) Just one of my little jokes. Seriously, every fish was is perfect pristine condition, with no damage or disease. I firmly believe one of the main reasons for this is the no match fishing rule."

Neil Warner sent in this photo of a cracking 15lb carp. Neil caught on luncheon meat along with several other fish between 5-8lb. His wife also caught fish to 5lb.

Stefano is a regular holiday visitor and had this smashing fish right at the start of his week.  I know he loves seeing his fish on the website! Let's have a report on the rest of your holiday!!

This photo is of a wonderful roach caught by Barry. Barry says the fish was weighed and witnessed at an amazing 2lb 8.  This is a fish of a lifetime for many anglers and by far the biggest I have seen from the lake.  Barry float fished red maggots to take the fish along with many other fish in a fine mixed bag.  Well done Barry!

Sunshine at last

There was some welcome sunshine today, and the fish certainly appreciate the warmth too.  I have just left Ian North catching one after the other on surface fished dog biscuits, the whole lake was alive with fish on the top looking for food.  Tony with the red trousers had 11 carp up to 14lb. Last weekend Eddie Clinton enjoyed good sport with fish up to 10 1/2lb including this lovely scaley specimen (right).

Robin Bostin (below) has been back after his success in April. Robin emails "Very wet today but in 3 & 1/2hrs caught loads of Roach again, 5 small Tench up to 1/2 pound and 3 Commons including this one which succumbed to a large piece of sweetcorn and topped 9lbs. Good to see the water level back up. Saw lots of fish on the surface despite the cool weather."

John Brooks from Caister-on-Sea emailed "Hi just a few pictures from an evening session i had on 30/04/12, i caught all of these on the feeder using maggots and corn with the biggest being 12 4oz. i fished the peg in the corner past the disabled pegs by the no access sign and fished across  tight to the island where the clump of reeds are. also had a couple of tench and some nice roach. many thanks for a great evenings fishing."

Drought Relief

The almost constant rain in April has thankfully brought some improvement in the water levels and we are almost back to normal for April levels.  The weather has kept a lot of anglers away and the banks have been quiet, but those that have come have experienced good sport.  One of those was Robin Bostin from Acle who emailed recently. "Had a cracking day at the fishery yesterday, catching four common's in the three to four pound bracket, two small Trench and lots of Roach up to the whopper pictured which had to be between 1 and half to 2 pounds!!! First trip of the year and had the place to myself but managed 2 of the 4 commons in front of some prospective anglers who I think are likely to visit soon. Also lost a common of about 7 or 8 pounds after playing it for a good while (had a small swear about that one!!!)" One of our guests in the Old Pig Barn, Peter Durbin also got amongst the big roach with fish over a pound and a half as did angler Roy Rowland. (29 April)

Easter Update

The lake is still reasonably quiet at the moment. The low overnight temperatures seem to be holding the carp back from feeding as strongly as the warmer day-time temperatures would suggest.  There have been a few doubles out though, Tony with the red trousers had fish to 12lb in a short evening session, Tony fished bread on the bottom.  Barry had a good day during march with plenty of rudd and tench and a 14lb common carp. On Sunday Graham Garrett popped down from Caister for a brief but successful afternoon session.  Fishing maggot and pellet he started with the roach and rudd before bagging carp up to 7 1/2lb. Graham fished a pole close in to cover and fed little and often.

Rosemary will start to collect catch reports on the bank and hopefully get a few photos as well, so if you want to appear on the website let Rosemary know! (9 April)
