Tom Bunting

Here is a fish caught by Tom Bunting.  All of these recent photos added to our website are printed and pinned up in our on-site toilet.  I am told that the toilet is kept so clean that anglers are actually spending time in there to browse the photos and other notices.  This must be a record for a fishery toilet!!

Rory Mills

Rory spent several sessions working out how to catch the bigger fish, when he eventually listened to the good advice available (only kidding!!) he managed to net several good fish including these nicely photographed fish of 14lb 8 and 7lb.

Michael's Haul

Here are some pictures of fish caught by young Michael Fraser.  His Dad Dean took him along to show him the ropes and he ended up catching 27 fish up to 3lb.  Using a simple pole rig with bread and sweetcorn and feeding corn regularly brought a succession of fish.  I particularly like the tench which must be over a pound and shows that even as slow growing as they are these beautiful green fish are getting bigger.

Harvested

With the drone of the combine harvester going all day long, the anglers needed a distraction and Scott Walden managed to concentrate long enough to land this lovely fish of 12lb 15.  He was more fortunate than his friend next door who played a large fish for over an hour before losing it at the net!

Double for Debbie

Here is a nice picture of Debbie Parke with a double figure mirror.  The 11lb fish was expertly played (ignoring the advice of husband Tony!)

Uncle Stan's allowed out

Uncle Stan visited Mill Road Fishery in August.  He was a bit rusty (mainly because he doesn't get out very much these days!). After catching plenty of small fish on Saturday he was shown the wonders of floating trout pellets and managed to catch 3 nice fish up to 8lb in the space of an hour before having to pack up and return to darkest Essex.  I also fished and had a few more from the surface, all the fish caught by Stan and myself were hooked within 1 metre of the bank.  Just shows how close you can attract them if you are quiet - it also saves losing your tackle on the islands.

Father and Son team

Father and son David and Shane Abel fished the lake this month and on their first visit took 22 fish.  Shane says "it was an amazing day especially as it was our first visit."  Shane returned a few days later and had several more carp including this nice fish. (13 August)

First trip success

Here are two youngsters, Charlie and Danny who enjoyed their first visit to Mill Road.  Fishing boilies they took 14 fish between them up to 8lb including these two nice fish hooked at the same time.  To get your picture on the website or in our hall of Fame in the toilet (yes really, it is very popular!) email your pictures to info@millroadfishery.co.uk (29 July)

Gamekeeper not poacher

17 year old Ewan Miller-Fik took this lovely 13 1/2lb mirror on only his second trip to the lake.  The college student who is studying to become a gamekeeper took the fish on breadflake fished near the surface. (22 July)

Adrian Weaver and Iain Schoolbred report fantastic fishing at the lake.  Adrian says "we lost count of the number of fish we caught that day. I had a common carp of 11lbs caught on paste fished over loose feed pellets tight to the margin".  He went on to say "On our next trip 3 weeks later I caught the the same common carp again it had pilled on a couple of pounds topping 13lbs. We  also had carp from 6lb to 9lbs plus over a hundred small carp . Keep up the good work its a great place to fish." (20 July)

Red Trousers scores

Anthony Mills, who until recently we had only identified as the Red Trouser man, was as pleased as punch with this mirror of 15lb.  Along with a common of 9lb  Anthony took these fish on large pieces of luncheon meat ledgered next to the island.

First twenty?

Rumour at the lake is of a fish caught at the start of the season that weighed 22 1/2lb.  The fish was apparently weighed, witnessed and photographed.  We look forward to seeing the evidence!  The previously biggest reported fish to regular Matty was 19 1/2lb - unless anyone out there knows different! (30 June)

Double for Henry

Here is a nice 10lb common for Henry West caught on dog food fished in the margins, well done! Perhaps you could let us know how you got all that gear to the lake on your bike!! (11 June)

Tips for getting bites

I am often being asked how to get bites by some of the less experienced anglers and I usually give the same advise about small baits and steady feeding in the margins.  On Saturday I thought I ought to give my own advice a try and make sure it still worked.  My objective was to try and get as many fish, irrespective of size as I could in two hours.  I started off fishing a 3m pole with a medium elastic, a small float with a single maggot on an 18 hook.  The depth was set to just 0.5m.  I began feeding a dozen maggots every minute right in the edge. It took maybe three or four minutes to get the first bite which I missed! But with the loose feed going in every minute I was soon getting a bite within seconds of casting in. Small Rudd and Roach all around 3 inches long would grab the bait almost as soon as it touched the water.  I had around a dozen fish with the odd slightly bigger one before deciding that I had proved a point.

I then set up a new rig.  Whilst doing this I started to feed more heavily, but less often.  A good handful of maggots every few minutes, the intention being to get some bait through the hoards of silver fish down to the bottom.  I set up a rig with a bigger pole float of around 5 no.4, but still on the same 3m pole.  Before adding the weights I plumbed the depth and ensured I was just over depth then I bunched all the shot about 20cm from the hook with a single no.8 between that and the hook.  I kept the same size 18 and baited with a single white maggot again.  As I had been feeding whilst tackling up I was hopeful of a quick bite. I lowered the rig straight down (it gets the hook down quicker than casting it out) and within 30 seconds the float disappeared.  This time it was a small carp of around half a pound.  I kept feeding large handfuls of maggots every few minutes and the bites continued, but instead of small roach, it was 8 ounce carp and nice green tench around 8 inches long.  I did get some rudd, but far fewer.  The biggest carp I had was around 3 pound and I probably had around a dozen carp, half a dozen tench and quite a few more rudd.

So if you want a busy day with guaranteed bites (well almost) take a box of maggots and have some fun! (10 June)
